MARQUETTE -- As part of the weeklong Young Authors conference at Northern Michigan University, students got active and creative.  Students were led by Jim Edwards of the Upper Peninsula Children's Museum.  The kids created a live adventure story and listened to poetry from a special guest.  Organizers say children using their imagination is a skill that can be used for the rest of their lives.

"If what we do in the classroom can be seen to be a career or a job or have a real outlet, then that's important. So whether we're meeting an engineer or chef or, especially in this case, an author, then perhaps writing a book in third grade is a really good idea, too," said Jim Edwards of the Upper Peninsula Children's Museum.

The children have been reading from books by author Marissa Moss who spoke Tuesday at the Peter White Public Library.  She will also be reading to the children throughout the week at NMU.
