MARQUETTE -- Monday marked the start of orientation week for Northern Michigan University Police Academy recruits. They'll spend the next 16 weeks and 800 hours training military style to become police officers.
Monday, last year's graduates passed down the recruit flag to the new academy, a tradition that was started last year. The new recruits will learn the laws of Michigan, shooting, and defensive tactics.
"It's paramilitary run. We need to have strict discipline. Police training can be dangerous, so we need to have strict discipline. They need to follow the rules and regulations and set an example for the community because police are held to a higher standard in the community," said Academy Instructor, Lt. Ken Love.
The graduates gave the new recruits a pep talk and some advice before their training began.
