HOUGHTON -- Houghton Middle School students piled into the Alumni Theater for their annual student recognition assembly.  Over 200 awards were handed out to students for their accomplishments in academics.

A variety of different groups and clubs were recognized including students who participated in math and science competitions.

This year, the math team is a standout among the different organizations because they rank eighth in the state.

"Academics are important, and the students want to put as much as they can into it and enjoy it, so we try to encourage, nurture, and support that so they feel their efforts are worthwhile," said Middle School Principal, Jim Luoma.

School officials say their students go above and beyond the required general education curriculum.
