MARQUETTE (AP) -- A conservation club that owns thousands of acres in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is suing to stop a new mine, claiming the project threatens property and the Salmon Trout River in Marquette County.

The Huron Mountain Club wants a federal judge to halt activity at a nickel-and-copper mine belonging to Kennecott Eagle Minerals. A lawsuit filed Sunday in federal court says the company failed to get federal permits and federal agencies failed to scrutinize the project.

The lawsuit names three federal agencies and the mining company. An email seeking comment was sent to a Kennecott Eagle spokeswoman.

The company is targeting an ore deposit that is expected to yield up to 300 million pounds of nickel and about 200 million pounds of copper.
