Postal Service could avoid bankruptcy

New legislation could save postal facilities, including processing center in Kingsford

KINGSFORD -- The U.S. Senate has passed overhaul legislation that would allow the Postal Service to avoid immediate bankruptcy.

The legislation will give the Postal Service an infusion of cash, and puts off decisions about closing post offices and ending Saturday delivery.

The bill gives $11 billion to pay down debt and buyout 100,000 postal employees.  It also prevents the closure of 100 mail processing centers, including the one in Kingsford, and bars any shutdowns before the November elections.

The issue now goes to the House of Representatives.
