MARQUETTE -- The Marquette County Board heard a presentation from City Manager Bill Vajda that illustrated the central Upper Peninsula area as a "micropolitan" area. The presentation compared the central U.P. to many other states and areas that are smaller in size yet have more economic impact. Vajda also spoke about ways to grow the U.P.'s exporting capabilities. There were those on hand who think that growth may not be what is needed.

"Why do people say the U.P. is someplace special? It's not because we have expressways, it's because we don't have expressways," said Catherine Parker, a resident of Marquette.

The board also discussed defining the terminology surrounding Sawyer International Airport in the hopes of expanding it to be a northern Midwest hub.
