MARQUETTE (AP) -- Federal prosecutors in the Upper Peninsula have added new charges and a second defendant in a case involving more than 4,000 pounds of explosive materials.
Ken Kassab of Brimley appeared in federal court in Marquette on Thursday on two charges, including the illegal transportation of explosive materials in 2010. He is temporarily detained without bail.
Defense attorney Karl Numinen says he hasn't seen the evidence. He says the charges took Kassab "by complete surprise." Kassab worked for co-defendant John Lechner, a farmer and builder, who is accused of buying and hiding the explosives.
Lechner was arrested in September after an informant said he wanted help to move a large quantity of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. He is not charged with plotting to detonate the mixture.
