REPUBLIC -- When you think of the Upper Peninsula, what may come to mind is usually winter sports or outdoor activities. However, I had no idea there are a lot of local artists in this area.
Facebooker Mimi Christensen feels "There are more people with many talents of the arts here in the U.P. than anywhere in this country."
With over 50 art galleries in the U.P., you will find Michigamme Moonshine Art Gallery. Moonshine's owner Friedrike Roach showcases artwork from over 40 local artists.
"I think most of the artists that reside here are very influenced by the Upper Peninsula, by the nature, streams, flowers, fauna, and the moose. A lot of local artists draw out of the color of the forms of the U.P.," said Roach.
In the paintings of Katherine Savu, you will see colorful images of the U.P., like downtown Marquette and the Finnish community. You can also see the spirit of this community in paintings of Thomas Cappuccio and Bill Hamilton.
Facebooker Lolly Mager writes: "Tons of artists own their own shops and many galleries throughout Marquette, some art pieces are shown in local restaurants and other businesses."
Art galleries like the Devos Art Museum at NMU open doors for many upcoming artists.
Melissa Matusca, the Director for Devos, says it's important to showcase the work of local artists, especially students.
"Trying to really make it as an artist isn't easy. A lot of them, almost all of them, are small business owners and so there's an economic factor to consider. The more the museum can do to help promote these artists and promote their careers, the more we can help those artists," said Matusca.
All of the artwork I've seen really reflects the spirit of the U.P. and its people.
If you're interested, Michigamme Moonshine Art Gallery will showcase a new collection starting April 30.
