MARQUETTE -- North Star Academy students hosted their fifth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Wednesday afternoon, raising over $1,100.

The academy invited anyone to donate $10 and receive a meal and a student-made bowl.  Students have spent the past few months making the bowls as a reminder that there are hungry people around the world who may not know when their next meal will be.

Several businesses donated food and supplies to the fundraiser, including Target, Midtown Bakery, Rice Paddy and Northern Michigan University food services.

"Every student was involved in some way, whether it was making bowls, hanging up posters, or coloring posters," said student Mary Ansell.  "I think it's great because it's like from the younger ages to the older ages, everyone has been making a difference.  Everyone has been able to feel like they helped."

The proceeds will be split between Room at the Inn and Operation Aoy, which is through the Rice Paddy restaurant and its owner, who delivers food and clothing to school children in need in rural Thailand.
