MARQUETTE -- Students at Northern Michigan University learned about water filters and watched a famous documentary on bottled water.
The event was organized by the Students for Sustainable Living. It started with a demonstration on how to make a water filter using household items. The water was taken directly from the Dead River Basin and purified with a biosand filter, which only needs sanitized rocks, sand, and plastic tubing. After that, a movie was shown called 'Tapped.'
The documentary tells of current issues and controversies surrounding bottled water.
"I think this is the best movie for bottled water," said President of SSL, Ivana Busuttil. "We looked at 'Thirst' and 'Blue Gold' which are other ones we were considering, but this one's gotten the best professional feedback and academic feedback."
Some students also signed a petition seeking to ban bottled water from campus, saying that water should be free for everyone.
