MARQUETTE -- Governor Rick Snyder has signed new legislation that affects the county prosecutor's office.  Originally, a circuit court judge appointed an assistant prosecuting attorney.  With the new legislation, the county prosecutor is responsible to appoint an assistant prosecutor.

Marquette County Prosecutor, Matt Weise, says it allows them to run the office efficiently.

"If I became ill or had to take a leave of absence, it allows me to appoint a successor on an interval basis.   So I could say this individual will serve for me for this period of time, while I can't be in the office.  So that's a helpful thing in case something should happen, and then there's no doubt as to who's in charge of this prosecuting attorney's office," said Weise.

He also says this will alleviate the circuit court judge's work load.
