ISHPEMING -- If you thought things were a little loud at the Ishpeming Fire Department Monday, there's a reason for that. The department recently installed its new fire siren, and they tested it Monday morning.
Officials say the old siren posed electrical issues once a new roof was installed last fall. Last week, electrical crews worked several hours to make sure the new siren worked properly.
The wavelengths remind people nearby that engines are en route to a possible fire.
"They are big vehicles, and people need to be aware of that when they're around the fire hall, and they hear the siren. Before, our old siren set off manually. So the guys would come in a minute or so after the alarm, and they would manually set the fire alarm. So this is a major step forward in safety, I believe," said Ishpeming Fire Chief, Ed Anderson.
It cost roughly $16,000 to install the new siren.
