MARQUETTE -- April is Safe Digging Month and the Upper Peninsula Power Company is reminding residents that digging near underground utilities can be very dangerous.

UPPCO is part of a nationwide a system to make it easy for those who need to do some digging, it's called Miss Dig.  Contractors or homeowners who wish to do some digging should dial 811 before they start their project.

"We call them dig-ins, as unfortunate as they are, they do occur," said Scott Roehl of UPPCO.  "And the biggest thing that we're concerned with is personal safety for those equipment operators, residents, homeowners who ever it might be."

UPPCO is reminding people that there is no charge for this service, and many times screws can come out and evaluate the site within three business days.  You can find more information on UPPCO and Miss Dig by clicking on the links.
