NEGAUNEE -- With the Easter Holiday coming this Sunday some parents may be considering giving pets as gifts.  The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter says while it may seem like a perfect fit to bring home a baby chick or rabbit for your children this may not be the best idea.  UPAWS new manager says parents sometimes jump into this decision without doing the proper research.

"You feel like you want to give something that's in the spirit of the season and a lot of people think that giving a bunny or a baby chicken or something like that is a fun thing to do for your child but we hope that people consider the longer term aspect of it, it's not just something for that time for that holiday," said Lareina Van Strien UPAWS Manager

She also says that rabbits in particular are not normally social animals the way that cats or dogs may be.  Van Strien recommends doing research on the animal you want and then UPAWS will help you pick out the right pet.
