NEGAUNEE -- We see them everyday -- patrolling the highways, fighting crime, and keeping Michigan safe.
Governor Snyder decided to honor the Michigan State Police for all of April, declaring it "Michigan State Police History Month," which is fitting for for their 95th anniversary.
"We owe them a lot. The men and women of the state police have always been there for us, and they put themselves at great risk to keep the rest of us safe. So, these folks are the best of the best. They're highly trained, highly-motivated, and extremely professional. And I don't think it's an overstatement to say that they're the pride of Michigan," Governor Snyder's Press Secretary Ken Silfven said.
The MSP began in 1919 -- starting out on horse, then gradually grew to become one of the most successful state police departments in the country.
Troopers want the state to know that the "dirty work" isn't what drives them.
"It's an exciting career, and when you graduate from the academy, it's one of the proudest moments you have as far as your professional career goes. It's a changing organization. It's a proud department, and I'm proud to be a part of that department," State Trooper Jeff Hunter said.
As for this upcoming year, Governor Snyder wants a 16% funding increase for the MSP, and two new trooper recruit schools.
