GWINN -- Around town they call her the 'Candy Woman.' For the last ten years Ann Queen has been making sweet treats for her friends and neighbors.
"When I make a batch, it's quite a few. I can't eat them all, so I share," said Queen.
She whips up her famous pretzel and chocolate candies about once a month. Making 24 batches a year, that's about 240 total, and she's always got more than enough to share.
"When I grew up during The Great Depression, nobody had too much. Anything we did have we shared, it just came natural," said Queen.
Helping out in many ways also has always come natural for the 90-year-old woman. She served as an Army Nurse during World War II.
"I was stationed in the states for awhile. Then when the war got bad, I went overseas," said Queen.
She made it back safely, met her husband and settled down in the U.P., now aiming to make this small community a better place, too.
"I don't sew. I'm not into crafts, and I don't have a real knack with it," said Queen. "This is something I can do that not everyone else does."
When her treats are ready, Queen hits the streets, visiting the Post Office, Bank and Township Office. Those are just a few of her usual stops. However, if you meet her along the way, you, too, might be the recipient of her friendly surprise.
"They say they enjoy them, so I keep making them. No one has turned me down yet," she said.
Queen says she intends to keep up with her sweet treat good deeds as long as she can.
