DUTTON (AP) -- A West Michigan woman whose vehicle was struck by lightning while she was driving to a mall had to kick out a window to get herself and her 4-year-old son out.
Dawn Mervau of Lowell tells WOOD-TV and The Grand Rapids Press that she was driving near the Kent County community of Dutton on Tuesday morning when she saw a flash and heard the sound of an explosion. She says side airbags went off, the vehicle stalled, and she coasted to the side of the road.
Mervau called her husband and then 911. Dispatchers told her to get out of the vehicle as soon as possible, but the power windows and locks didn't work.
Firefighters responded after they escaped. Mervau and her son weren't injured.
