HANCOCK -- The Quincy Mine Hoist in Hancock has been vandalized.

Graffiti now paints four separate locations which includes the shaft lights, the number four boiler room, the mining captain's office and the rock skips.  Most of the graffiti wasn't noticed until last Wednesday.

"My first reaction was, I was gutted," said Quincy Mine Hoist Manager Glenda Bierman.   "It's like, why would somebody want to damage such a significant historical site?  I felt like somebody personally hit me."

The superintendent of the Keweenaw National Historical Park was on hand early on Monday to assess the damage.

Because of the sites historical significance the association says they can't just cover up some graffiti with paint and don't want to cause anymore damage to the site.  The Houghton County Sheriff's Department is asking for anyone with any information to contact them.
