MARQUETTE -- Wind gusts have knocked down trees causing power losses to nearly 3,000 Upper Peninsula Power Company customers, according to a statement released on Tuesday

UPPCO says that around 2,000 customers have now have power restored.

The hardest hit areas include Keweenaw County, Ontonagon/White Pine, and Munising/Chassell.  Marquette Board of Light and Power customers in Marquette and some outlying areas are also experiencing power outages.

UPPCO expects outages to continue as long as winds are gusting but hopes to have power restored sometime on Tuesday.  The National Weather Service expects wind gusts to possibly reach 50 miles an hour.

All available crews are out working on the downed power.  If you are an UPPCO customer, you can reach the Emergency Outage line by calling (800) 562-7809 and report the situation in your area.  UPPCO is reminding people to stay away from downed power lines and any potentially dangerous situation with downed tree branches.
