MARQUETTE -- The U.P. honored its favorite Finn Saturday, Carl Pellonpaa, for five decades of embracing the Finnish culture.
Finland Calling is a Sunday morning dose of Finnish stories, photographs, and, of course, music. The show made its debut on the TV6 screen in 1962. Fifty years later, it's still going strong. Saturday's celebration included a live band with dozens gathering at the Marquette Regional History Center.
Pellonpaa said he is overwhelmed by the community's support throughout the years.
"It's an accomplishment, yes it is. I'm proud of that," said Pellonpaa. "Immense amount of pride, self-satisfaction, and shall I say the endorsement of the people of the U.P. for putting up with a Finnish program."
You can watch the entire event Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m., 9:30 central on TV6. There will be one more celebration at the Elks Lodge in Ishpeming from 2 until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
