MARQUETTE -- This is perfect weather to get some exercise on your bike, but for those who are taking these rides, you should remember the same traffic rules apply to you.
Bicycling around town is a great way to enjoy gorgeous weather, but be careful where you are riding. Facebooker Peggy Manninen writes: "I am a frequent pedestrian and have a lot of run-ins with bicycles quietly coming up behind me."
Bicyclists should ride with the flow of traffic in bike lanes or bike paths. When you're on your bike, you need to stop at every stop sign, stop light, or yield sign.
You also should use your hands to signal for turns or stopping. Officer Craig Marker says if you don't, you could get pulled over.
"If they go through a stop sign or a red light or at fault at an accident, they could receive a ticket just like somebody in a vehicle would," said Marker.
Experts say most injuries occur from not wearing safety gear. So put on your helmet before riding off. Also make sure you have the right safety gear. You need a red light in the back of your bike and a white light in front. Bikes need to have reflectors on both wheels. When cycling at night, wear bright colors.
Jeff Stasser, the co-owner of Down Wind Sports, says bikers also need to watch for cars.
"Cars are not really prepared for, they're not used to seeing bikes out this time of year. So they have to be retrained to look out for bikes, kids riding their bikes and popping out of driveways. Just if everybody slowed down a little bit, it would be nice," said Stasser.
Officials say that a few accidents per year occur between a biker and a vehicle. They also want to emphasis to not operate a bike while intoxicated.
