HOUGHTON -- The U.P. is filled with hundreds of trails giving people the opportunity to explore the outdoors, but what happens if you get lost?
One survivalist is offering classes in Houghton to teach you everything you will need to know to survive in the wild.
It is a weeklong course, and the first day you will learn about primitive fire by using friction; then you will learn about modern fire using spark-based methods. Survivalist David Talaga says you will also try to start a fire using a magnifying glass.
The second day, you will learn how to build short-term shelters, like a lean-to, and then move on to more long-term shelters. The next day you will learn about food and water procurement, and the final day of the course will be a test to see how much you have learned.
“If you get lost and you have to survive, you can get to some pretty remote places, and so that’s really what I want people to learn, which is how to live if they get lost or are put in a survival situation,” said Talaga.
There is a donation-based fee to take the course, and all of the proceeds will go to charity.
The classes will be offered May 14-18, and if you are interested in taking the class or giving a donation, click here.
