HERMANSVILLE -- The quiet town of Hermansville has, once again, come alive with the sounds of basketball as the 74th annual Gold Medal tournament kicks off.

The tournament started Friday night and will run through Sunday, March 25. This year 80 teams will play a total of 72 games divided into eight classes. The games have been tradition almost every year since 1974.

It's not only a lot of fun from the teams from all over the U.P. and northeast Wisconsin, but it also helps out the local economy, organizers said.

"It's an economy boost for the restaurants, bars, and not only for this area, but it overflows to Powers, Carney," said Ray Bray, the tournament's manager.

Money raised from the tournament goes to school scholarships and other area non-profits.
