The public gathered to find out how to protect their property

HOUGHTON -- Protect your property…that was the theme of Friday's free seminar held at the Portage Lake District Library.

An attorney spoke to the pubic about some of the recent changes in the law for people who own homes and other property.

A new Supreme Court ruling now gives people the opportunity to pass their homes on to their children without a "pop-up" in property tax.

Those in attendance also learned about the importance of legal documents and a power of attorney.

"You can either let events control your life or you can control events. The sooner people start thinking about these issues and making plans and making sure they have their affairs in order before they experience a decline without going through the expense and delay and sometimes publicity of a court preceding," said attorney Stewart Hakola.

Another topic discussed was Michigan’s new State Recovery Program in regards to what rights and responsibilities citizens have if they are facing a nursing home with the risk of losing their home.
