Twenty-one students made it to State Competition

CALUMET -- Besides homework and other extracurricular activities, these students have also found time to join the Business Professionals of America (BPA).

Dressed in their finest attire, students learn the steps on how to become a business leader and other skills like confidence, work ethic, and time management.

"The students can either compete in an individual event or a student project, and they are essentially solving business problems that they may encounter five or ten years down the road when they're out there in the business world," said Co-Advisor Lisa Twardzik.

The Economic Research Team's task was to reduce the tax burden on the average American citizen by cutting and reforming government programs.

"I wanted to be a part of Business Professionals of America because I would like to go into some sort of business field, and I feel that participating in this event would prepare me for owning my own business," said President of the Calumet Chapter of BPA, Jaikob Djerf.

The Financial Analyst Team reviews financial statements from businesses and gives them recommendations on how to expand or better mange their money.

"This year I've gained leadership responsibilities. I try to help other students in this organization prepare for their individual events or their team events," Djerf said.

Twenty-one students will compete at BPA's State Leadership Conference in Grand Rapids, so they are hosting a spaghetti dinner Saturday, March 17 to help raise enough funds for travel. The spaghetti dinner will be from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose building of Calumet High School.

Tickets are on sale for $8 each or two for $15. To purchase tickets, call (906) 337-0311, extension 2203.

Proceeds will go towards sending contestants to the state competition held on March 22-25 in Grand Rapids.
