ESCANABA -- The Escanaba Rollin' Hellcats are making a name for themselves in the U.P.  They're the newest women's roller derby team, joining one other team in the U.P., the Kingsford Krush.

Two nights a week, these women come out and show just how tough they are.

"You're going to get bruises, basically. Maybe not from other players, but from just falling in general. You use your hips and your core, basically, to try to move people out of your way," said skater Carrie Bartel.

And anything from glitter to fishnets goes. Each woman picks her own "boutfit" and alias that is supposed to represent her personality.

"It's up to each skater's personality, and you can kind of see that. It's kind of goofy, but I love glitter, hence my glitter all over. And I've got glitter on my helmet," Bartel added.

And what's shocking to most is a lot of the women on the team haven't played before.

All the team wants is a committment, and no prior playing is required.

"We're basically a bunch of misfits trying to work together and have a lot of fun. There's all ages, all sizes, all backgrounds. It's empowering. It's a lot of fun," said team captain Dulcie Veraghen.

The team has been seeing more interest from women all over the U.P. since the team kicked off just over three months ago.
