ESCANABA -- It's called 'Gather at the Gallery,' and it's a program that brings people with dementia to an art gallery. It's also new to the U.P.
The program started last Spring. A group from Perspectives Adult Daycare Center in Escanaba recently made a trip to the Bonifas Fine Arts Center. Even though the adults have dementia, Alzheimer's, and short-term memory loss, the art outings are very relaxing for them.
"The program that it's modeled after is called Meet me at Moma, and that's in NYC, and when they did that program, they discovered that folks with dementia...it's a very relaxing activity to look at art. You don't have to have any short-term memory recall to appreciate it," said Heather Addison of the Alzheimer's Association.
The participants also took part in a clay-sculpting activity after the tour.
