IRON MOUNTAIN -- Spring break students from the University of North Dakota are ditching sandy beaches for a community service tour that's made its way to the U.P.
Iron Mountain was the first stop on the tour Saturday afternoon. About 30 students helped out around town, completing simple service projects like updating city hall's scrapbooks and cleaning up downtown.
It's the first time the national Pay it Forward spring break movement has ever ventured to the U.P.
The students say the trip is well worth the distance.
"Doing something a little more productive, you kind of maybe get caught up in the social scene, college life. This is a good chance to help people, give back," said Austin Dhuyvetter, a UND student.
The students will head downstate to complete a service project in five other cities. They will also make their way to Ohio, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
