MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Sheriff's office is reminding victims of crime that there's an invaluable, yet free, resource at their fingertips.

It's called Victim Information and Notification Everyday or 'VINE.' The automated system allows individuals to sign up online or by phone to receive alerts about a suspect's booking, court appearances, and, most importantly, release date from jail or prison.

The resource can be especially important for victims of violent crime, officials said.

"If their life has been threatened, maybe they'll have time to get a concealed weapon, all kinds of things they could do to prepare for the release of especially violent dangerous criminals," said Sheriff Michael Lovelace.

VINE is the only way a victim can ensure they are notified of a suspect's release.
