MANISTIQUE -- Last fall, a group of parents submitted a letter to the board of education, asking for a preschool program for their kids who don't qualify for existing programs in Manistique.
There are eligibility restrictions for the Great Start Readiness Program that are based on risk factors and income.
Now that dream of a preschool and daycare program for three and four year olds has become a reality. It's the "Little Explorers Early Childhood Program" at Emerald Elementary.
The first opening day with students was January 24, and Thursday was the open house and registration kick-off for the 2012-13 school year.
"For this year, we have tried to make it very affordable for parents, and we are offering our program at one dollar per hour for both the preschool and the daycare. Now that, of course, is subject to change for the fall," said Program Director, Christi Ryan. "But we're hoping to keep it as low and competitive as we can."
There are 19 children currently registered, and the program has a 22 child limit.
