A class at MSHS has students succeeding in the business world
MARQUETTE -- A group of Marquette Senior High School students are headed to the Business Professionals of America state competition to show off their website. The website is called "Marquette Moves" and aims at getting their classmates active.
They made the project in their business class to prepare for the regional competition, where they took first place.
"I think just so they can see that's an authentic project, something that they're actually doing...creating a real website. They're making connections in our community. It's something that's real that they enjoy doing, and they enjoy the reward of getting our students involved," said Business teacher Kim Carr.
They design fitness challenges each week, such as a certain number of push-ups or jumping jacks, and students submit the "picture proof" online. Then, each week, they have a drawing out of all the students who submitted, and the winner gets a prize that was donated by one of the local business sponsors.
Sponsors include Downwind Sports, Casualties, MC Sports, Marquette Mountain, and the YMCA.
The group had one concept in mind when designing their site.
"Originality, most importantly, we didn't go online and find a template to use. We designed it 100 percent ourselves," said website co-creator Kyle Mohr.
And that originality could set them apart for the competition.
"The fact that we actually got out and did something with our entire school and not just made a website that promoted healthy living; the fact that we actually set up a challenge system and implemented it within our school definitely sets us apart and gives us that edge when we go down and compete," said website co-creator Nick Millado.
The entire class will be competing in Grand Rapids on March 21.
While there, they'll also attend business seminars where they'll learn about entrepreneurship, marketing, and interviewing skills.
