ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP -- Residents in the central U.P. are still digging out from this past weekend's powerful storm.
On Monday morning, snow removal crews in Ishpeming Township pushed snow banks further off the side of the road.
The Hoist Basin, just north of Ishpeming, received the highest snow accumulation, getting up to 27.4 inches.
Meteorologists at the National Weather Service say all of the right ingredients came together to cause the heavy snowfall.
"We had a low pressure system that moved in from the south of us," explained Megan Babich, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. "It moved across Indiana, causing all of those tornadoes, and it moved up north to the eastern U.P. [The storm] brought us quite a bit of snow and in addition to that, with the cold air coming in behind it, we had some lake enhancement."
The snow may not be sticking around for too long as the National Weather Service's Climate Center predicts above normal temperatures for the rest of March.
