MARQUETTE -- Marquette has been chosen as the first city to host a new hockey state tournament.
The Michigan Amateur Hockey Association has organized the first girls hockey tournament featuring teams from across the state.
The teams do have a northern flavor with representatives from the Copper Country, Mackinaw City and Marquette, but some have come from as far away as Farmington Hills.
"[It's a] great, great chance I tell you if you've never seen girls hockey before, it's a great chance to come out and see it, i think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised," said Tim McIntosh, Director of Junior Hockey.
The state championship games started Friday afternoon and continue through Sunday with the final championship game being held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview Arena.
