ESCANABA -- Senator Tom Casperson and State Representatives Ed McBroom and Matt Huuki held a round table discussion on Friday at the Delta-Schoolcraft ISD in Escanaba.
One of the topics that came up was the state budget impact on early childhood education. Senator Casperson asked the participants for support in telling officials where the need is.
He said there are several entities bidding for dollars right now.
According to him, the governor will use some of the surplus to pay down debt.
Educators also discussed the mandate that all kindergarteners attend class for a full day starting in September.
"It's been successful," said Schoolcraft County Parent Liaison Leann Espinoza. "The kids do great, and I see a huge difference between half day and full day and what they learn. And when they're ready to go on to first grade, they're ready. What takes place here is the planning for the events that we do for great start. It's where we just do our everyday work for young children in Michigan."
Next Saturday, the coalitions will be meeting with State Representative Steve Lindbergh at the U.P. Children's Museum in Marquette.
