CALUMET -- Even though its winter with snowfall on and off, summer will be here before you know it, and that means summer vacation.

According to Money magazine, the average American family spends $1,600 on their summer vacation, and experts say now is the time to start planning.

“If it’s a large group, I suggest booking ahead of time. A lot of people plan their summer vacations in the winter and the other way around, and it makes it a lot easier to get the accommodations and everything else that they need,” said Trailside Lodge owner Susan Bushong.

The recently renovated Trailside Lodge offers 26 rooms, and this summer they are expecting to be at full capacity.

Experts say before you book a room, you should make sure you know the services each place offers before you fully commit.

A visitor’s bureau is the perfect place to go if you are unfamiliar with the area. They offer travel guides and other information to help you get to some of the most fascinating places around town, and do not forget to sign the guest book before you leave.

“Roughly the [Keweenaw Convention &] Visitor’s Bureau will handle between 12 to 15,000 visitors a season, so it’s busy and it’s getting busier every year,” said President of the Keweenaw Convention Visitor’s Bureau, Dianne Peterson.

And those who live in the Keweenaw say they offer plenty of fun summer activities.

“With the trail being right there, ATVing and UTVing is becoming more popular,” Bushong said.

Experts say before you take a trip: (1) Set aside a drawer or basket for the items you would like to take on your trip, (2) Make a list that has all the places you want to see, and (3) Create a budget on how much you are willing to spend and stick to it.

Once you have everything in order, experts say enjoy your vacation because it goes by quickly.
