NEWBERRY -- Two hundred laps on a three-fourth mile cross country course with $1,000 at stake.

Despite our mild winter conditions, the One Lunger 200 Vintage Enduro snowmobile race was able to go on without a hitch Saturday morning. Twenty-nine sleds from 1980 or older with single-cylinder motors raced the course as part of the Great Lakes Snowmobile Series in Newberry.

The sleds typically only get up to about 40 miles per hour, and organizers said that makes it a safe race.

"I would say it's probably one of the safest forms of racing I've seen because you fall off at 40 miles an hour, you might get bruised, but never had anyone hurt yet," said Steve Maki, the race's director.

The warm weather has cancelled a few Great Lakes snowmobile series races this year; organizers are hoping they'll still be able to reschedule.
