MARQUETTE -- An increasingly popular form of Latin-inspired exercise has made a splash at the Marquette County YMCA.
The YMCA has offered regular Zumba classes for a while now, but they decided to take the plunge into water after hiring a specialized trainer. The wet version has proven to be a big hit among gym goers, particularly the baby boomer crowd.
Health leaders at the YMCA say the water-based exercise provides just the right amount of resistance for strength training, while remaining easy on the joints.
"If you Google Aqua Zumba, it says a party in the pool and that's exactly what it is," said Health Coordinator Jenna Zdunek. "It's a fun exercise. You don't even realize you are exercising."
As of right now, the weekly class begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday mornings, but as more gym members jump in, the gym is looking to add more classes.
The class is free for members. Those who are not members of the YMCA can pay for a seven dollar day pass to join on the party in the pool.
