MARQUETTE -- Marquette Mayor John Kivela officially announced he's running for State Representative in the 109th district.

The mayor and his supporters met at the Elks Club in Marquette Thursday night.

Kivela says he decided to run for the seat as a Democrat a year ago after discussing it with his family. Now he plans to venture out of Marquette, meeting new people around the U.P. and discussing their concerns.

"I think my best attribute is just communicating to others.  I can work with anyone to get a deal done, and I'm committed to that," said Kivela.  "You know, my experience at the commission shows that.  I'll work through any problem."

Those who came to the event signed petitions for Kivela and bid on a variety of items, including an autographed Detroit Lions football. The bids will be donated to the U.P. Children's Museum.
