IRON MOUNTAIN -- The United States Postal Service made an announcement on Thursday which states that the Iron Mountain (Kingsford, MI) Processing and Distribution Facility (P&DF) will be closing.

This decision comes as a result of a five month study conducted by the USPS.  Work being done at the Iron Mountain facility will be shifted to the Green Bay, Wisconsin facility.

Once the transition is complete operations will cease at the Iron Mountain facility.

"The decision to consolidate mail processing facilities recognizes the urgent need to reduce the size of the national mail processing network to eliminate costly underutilized infrastructure," said Chief Operating Officer Megan Brennan. "Consolidating operations is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation."

A closure date for the Iron Mountain facility has not been specified by the USPS.
