MARQUETTE -- The Marquette City Commission met on Wednesday morning for a work session on the 2012-2013 fiscal year budget.
The primary focus for commissioners was to come up with a consensus on proposed capital projects. Agenda items discussed included improvement on the Lakeview Arena facility, two additional patrol cars for the Marquette Police Department, and investing in a new sidewalk sweeper.
The discussion comes as uncertainty surrounds the future of the Presque Isle Power Plant, a major source of tax revenue for the city.
"There's good reason to believe that the power plant will remain open with this new partnership and expand its tax base," said Marquette Mayor John Kivela. "So there are more positives, but with uncertainty; we just want to take a cautious approach and spend our money wisely."
The commission is working to stay within its four million dollar bond limit to prevent adding to the city's debt.
Future meetings are planned to discuss the operational portion of the budget.
