KINGSFORD -- Over 1100 students participated in the Great Eight Winter Games in Dickinson County on Saturday.  The last remaining event of its kind in the U.P. kicked off with music from local band, Electric Soul, as well as the traditional lighting of the Olympic torch.

The fourth through eighth graders participated in everything from chess to archery, with the chance to win medals at each event.

The kids may be young, but they are focused.  Even in a sport as straightforward as archery, there is strategy involved.

“I stand sideways and I just keep my fingers right by my lips and I just gently pull back; I don't flick it,” said Heather Harris.

The games went on without a hitch.  Champions were crowned in volleyball, chess, table tennis, basketball, and other events.
