MARQUETTE -- Another UP 200 is in the books, and on Monday morning, mushers, organizers, and volunteers gathered one last time to remember the race with a breakfast and award ceremony.
Mushers got the chance to share tales from the trails at Monday's ceremony at the Holiday Inn. Many mushers expressed their gratitude to race organizers for keeping the annual competition alive this year, despite the uncooperative weather.
Top finishers were awarded with cash prizes, while one Alaskan racer was bestowed the honorable red lantern for her last place finish.
"Mushers definitely compete for that at the end of the pack. It's something kind of fun that you can say that you brought everybody home from the race," said musher Monica Zappa. "There's nobody left on the trail behind you."
According to race officials, this year had the highest amount of cash prizes. Three time winner Ryan Anderson took home $7,200.
