MARQUETTE -- The Black Student Union at Northern Michigan University hosted a program in honor of Black History Month. The program contained poems, songs, and movie clips that illustrate how far African Americans have come in this country since the times of slavery.

The program came together with each member of the Black Student Union contributing in some way.

"Everybody on the program is a BSU member, so they all contributed with a poem or song, speech. We have a few clips we're showing about where we were and how we're uprising and continue to rise even through the struggle," said Aaron Whitaker of the NMU Black Student Union.

The program is part of a weeklong celebration of Black History month and more events are scheduled.

On Friday the union plans to hold a mock slave auction that is intended to convey the feeling and emotion that was involved in the slave trade.
