NEGAUNEE -- This Saturday, the 1430th Engineers Unit of the Michigan National Guard will hold a Salute to Freedom program at the Lakeview Gymnasium in Negaunee.

The salute is in recognition of the service the 1430th provided in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.  The soldiers will be presented with an encased flag set, a commemorative coin and medal at the event.

But it's not just the soldiers who are being recognized.

"The families are highly encouraged to be a part of this event because they are being honored also, and when we held these events in the past, we've had quite a bit of community support," said Major Scott Etelamaki of the 1430th.

The Salute to Freedom is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the Lakeview Gymnasium in Negaunee. Following the event, the soldiers will attend a formal ball held at the Marquette Armory Saturday evening.
