DELTA COUNTY -- Road weight restrictions will soon go into effect for Delta County roads, and the restrictions will affect any type of commercial vehicle.

In the spring when the frost starts to come out of the ground, the water starts to push through. As the heavy trucks drive over it, the asphalt begins to crack.

Vehicles, like dump trucks, semi-trucks and logging trucks, are required to have 35 percent reduction in load limits per axle. The intent is to decrease road damage, and there are penalties for those who don't comply.

"The State Police Motor Carrier and also the Delta County Sheriff's Department carry scales," said Rob VanEffen, Delta County Road Commission Manager.  "If they see a truck that's heavy, they'll weigh it up, and then there are fines based on pounds overweight."

According to the Delta County Road Commission manager, they're waiting for changes in Lansing to get the county more funding to start improving the roads.
