MARQUETTE -- Race organizers for the UP 200 are in desperate need of volunteers.

Due to the changes in the race that have it starting in Chatham and ending in Grand Marais, volunteers are needed in the Grand Marais area to assist in traffic control, street crossings and checkpoints.

There are several shifts available to sign up for and assist the UP 200 racers.

"We've got the colleges helping us out some, and we're sending some of the students out there, but right now we're probably still in need of about 15 volunteers to go out that way. I understand it's going to be a little bit of a hardship if you're coming from this area because it is a drive to Grand Marais," said UP 200 Board Member Denise Gurnack.  "But it is something that would be greatly appreciated by the UP 200."

The UP 200 is scheduled to start Friday at 8 p.m. in Chatham.

If you are interested in signing up to volunteer, please check out the U.P. 200 website.
