ESCANABA -- Bay College in Escanaba hosted the Skills USA regional competition Friday, and the teens were tested on their drafting, computer, and welding skills.

More than 150 high schoolers from the U.P. competed. Some of the students who competed in the welding competition are hobbyists, but most are interested in a career in welding. The teens used a blueprint and then took a hands-on welding test to demonstrate their abilities. There was a final grading and awards ceremony.

Students who placed in their respective skills category will qualify to compete in a statewide competition in Lansing this spring.
