The rider was killed when his snowmobile left the trail and hit a tree

ALGER COUNTY -- A snowmobiler was killed in Alger County Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened at 12:15 p.m. in Burt Township about five miles west of Grand Marais.

The Alger County Sheriff says 50-year-old Russell Eugene Barker of downstate Clarkson was killed when his snowmobile left the trail and hit a tree.

The accident remains under investigation.
