Dealers say now is the time to trade in
MARQUETTE COUNTY -- The average age of vehicles on the road today is ten years, and that's older than ever.
Dealers say right now they're able to resell 'older' models, and they're buying them for more than you might expect.
"I would tell you before if it got to 200,000 miles and 10 to 15 years old, that it was junk, but that's not so anymore," said Greg Johnstone of Public Service Garage.
Age is no longer a determining factor, but tried and true standards, like mileage and model, continue to make or break a resale value. Dealers prefer vehicles under 100,000 miles so they can offer the next buyer a warranty. Ultimately the selling price can come down to the little things.
"If you keep your car in average or better than average condition, you are probably going to see a return rate anywhere from a grand to $2,000 more," Johnstone said.
That means if you have questionable tires or a less than presentable interior, they should be fixed before the sale to bring in the most cash.
Then there are value busting repairs that are not a quick fix. Mechanics say the key to a healthy, valuable car is regular maintenance. Under car inspections can also give you a look at how your car is really holding up.
"We had some occasions of inspecting cars and found the framework rusted, suspension no longer able to hold together very well; it could break apart on a certain bump or turn. Naturally that's going to be dangerous," said Fox Negaunee mechanic Doug Young.
