MARQUETTE CO. -- The Department of Environmental Quality announced a public hearing to discuss a proposed new road in Marquette County.

The county's road commission submitted an application for permits to create Marquette County Road 596, a 21-mile stretch to connect US-41 with CR AAA near Kennecott's Eagle Mine. Commissioners said the road will improve emergency, commercial and recreational access to northwest Marquette County.

The hearing is scheduled to take place on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Country Village Banquet and Conference Center in Ishpeming.
